Coffee Table Styling: The Rule of Three

By Bernadette Lemaire6 min read

Coffee table decor ideas built on the rule of three: something tall, something low, something living or scented, plus trays, books and mistakes to avoid.

In this story

The simplest coffee table decor ideas follow one formula: something tall, something low, and something living or scented, gathered on a tray so they read as one arrangement. Add a stack of books, give the table a single sculptural object to look at, and leave most of the surface clear for cups and elbows.

The formula works on any table, and it is the same one behind the mantel and the shelf. This guide covers the three parts, trays and books, the one object that does the talking, how a round table changes the layout, and the mistakes that make a table look cluttered.

The rule of three

Three is a convention, not a law, but it has a precedent outside decorating. According to Wikipedia, the structure of some ikebana arrangements rests on a triangle of three main points, which some schools name heaven, human and earth. On a coffee table the three points are different heights, so the eye travels around the group instead of stopping at one object.

RoleWhat it doesIdeas
Something tallGives the group a high pointA vase of branches, a single stem, a candlestick holding an unlit taper
Something lowAnchors the group and gives the eye a restA stack of books, a shallow bowl, a dish
Something living or scentedAdds life or fragranceCut flowers, a small plant, a bowl of fruit, a scented object

Repeat one thing across the three, such as a color, a material or a finish, and vary the heights. Change everything at once and the group looks accidental. Let the arrangement fill about a third of the table, the same proportion we suggest for candles in Decorative Candle Ideas: Styling Candles You Don't Burn.

Trays and books

A tray turns three objects into one arrangement, protects the table and lifts away in one move when you need the surface. Brass and pewter look formal, wood looks warm, and marble looks cool. A tray about half the length of the table leaves room for a cup on either side. If the table is marble or another stone, give any wax piece a small dish of its own: the Natural Stone Institute notes that an oil-based stain will darken stone.

Books supply the low, heavy part. Lay two or three flat with the largest at the bottom, and the stack becomes a plinth for a small object. Wikipedia defines a coffee table book as an oversized, usually hardcover book meant for display on a table, so choose ones you'd want to open: a painter, a garden, a city you know. The Library of Congress advises giving books minimal exposure to light, and ideally none that is direct or intense, so keep the stack out of the sun.

Candles on a coffee table

Decorative candles for a coffee table are best left unlit. A coffee table sits at the height of children and pets, and the National Fire Protection Association's messages for fire educators say to keep burning candles out of their reach and never to place a lit candle where it can be knocked over. The National Candle Association says candles need at least 12 inches from books and 3 inches from each other, which a table of books and magazines rarely allows.

If you do light one, give it its own space away from the books, never leave it unattended, and put it out before you leave the room. Home Fragrance and Pets: What to Know covers homes with animals.

One sculptural object

Every table needs one thing to look at. Choose an object with a clear silhouette and some weight: a ceramic vessel, a bowl with a good shape, a sculptural candle. Sculptural Candles: When a Candle Becomes an Object explains the category. Keep to one, since two objects competing for attention cancel each other out.

Le Bonne Pomme can be that object and the scented piece at once. It is an apple of hand-poured soy and beeswax, hand-painted one by one and presented under a handblown glass cloche. Displayed under its cloche, it scents a room without being lit. Set it toward the middle of the tray rather than at the edge of the table, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. The National Candle Association notes that candles may fade in bright light.

Round or rectangular

LayoutThree pieces stepped by height, or two small groups with a gapA cluster like a clock face, with the tallest piece nearest the middle and the lowest at the edge
Watch forA long straight row that looks like a shelfA tall piece that blocks the view across the table

On a rectangular table, leave one end clear for cups. On a round table, group the pieces in a cluster rather than a row, since there's no long edge to line them up against. Keep the tallest piece below the sightline of someone sitting across from you.

Mistakes

  • Everything at one height. A row of equal objects reads as a shelf. Vary the heights.
  • No tray. Loose objects drift and look scattered. A tray gathers them.
  • A lit candle beside the books. Keep a flame 12 inches from books, as the NCA advises.
  • Wax in the sun. Move wax pieces off a table that catches the afternoon.
  • Filling every inch. A table needs room for cups and the book you're reading.
  • A matched set. Three identical objects look like a display case. Vary at least one thing.
  • Loose remotes. Put them in a lidded box.

Autumn on the coffee table

Keep the tray and change the pieces. For the tall element, try branches with turning leaves in a jug. For the low one, try a bowl of apples or pears. Keep dry branches well away from any flame. Mantel Decor Ideas for Every Season has more for autumn.

An apple suits the season. Le Bonne Pomme reads as autumn fruit in October and as a still life the rest of the year, and it scents a room without being lit for about 60 days, depending on room size.

FAQ

How do you decorate a coffee table? Gather something tall, something low and something living or scented on a tray, add a stack of books, and leave most of the surface clear.

Is it OK not to have a coffee table? Yes. A pair of side tables, an ottoman with a tray on it or a small table beside the sofa all do the job, and the same formula works on the tray.

What do you put on a round coffee table? A round or oval tray, set a little off center, with three pieces at different heights. Put the tallest nearest the middle and keep it below the sightline across the table.

Can you put candles on a coffee table? Yes, as decoration, and unlit is simplest. A lit candle needs 12 inches of clearance from books, 3 inches from other candles, and a spot out of reach of children and pets.

What are good coffee table decor ideas for men? The formula is the same. What changes is the material: a leather or dark wood tray, stone or metal objects, and books on subjects you'd talk about.
