A lit candle usually takes a couple of hours to scent a room properly, though you'll smell it up close sooner. Its fragrance comes mostly from the pool of melted wax around the wick, and that pool needs time to spread, which is why candle makers judge a burning candle's scent after two to four hours. An unlit candle never warms up, so a candle displayed in a room scents it continuously and quietly, for as long as it has fragrance to give.
Lit candles: typical timings
The scent of a burning candle is its hot throw. CandleScience, a candle-making supplier, evaluates hot throw once a candle has burned for at least two hours but no more than four (CandleScience).
The reason is the melt pool. The National Candle Association (NCA), the US trade group, explains that a lit candle releases its fragrance by evaporation from the hot wax pool. CandleScience adds that the larger the pool, the stronger the throw.
How long the pool takes to reach the edge depends on the candle's width. The NCA's rule of thumb is to burn a candle one hour for every inch of diameter.
| Candle width | Time to a full melt pool, by the NCA's rule |
|---|---|
| 2 inches | About 2 hours |
| 3 inches | About 3 hours |
| 4 inches | About 4 hours |
So a 3-inch candle lit at 7 p.m. should be close to full strength by 9 or 10. Don't push past four hours, though. The NCA advises against burning a candle for longer than that at a time, and suggests letting it cool for at least two hours before relighting.
What speeds it up or slows it down
- Room size and height. CandleScience warns that a candle 1.5 inches across is unlikely to fill a large room with strong scent, and lists high ceilings and humidity among the conditions that change how scent comes across. A small room with the door closed fills sooner.
- Drafts. Moving air carries fragrance off before it builds, and it disturbs the flame. The NCA advises keeping candles away from fans, air conditioners, open windows and busy walkways.
- The melt pool. A candle that has tunneled, burning down the middle and leaving hard wax at the sides, has a smaller pool and gives off less scent. Candle Tunneling: What It Means and How to Fix It covers the cause and the fixes.
- The wax. Waxes melt at different temperatures, so the pool spreads at different speeds. Soy vs Beeswax Candles, and the Case for Blending compares two of them.
- Your nose. People notice a smell less the longer they're around it, a process researchers call habituation (Pellegrino et al., Physiology & Behavior, 2017). Step out and come back before you decide a candle isn't working. Why Can't I Smell My Candle? covers seven other reasons too.
Unlit candles
An unlit candle has no warm-up. The NCA notes that fragrance is also released from the solid candle itself, not only from a melted pool. That happens at room temperature, all the time, so a candle on display scents a room continuously rather than in sessions.
It's quieter than a lit candle, because fragrance leaves solid wax slowly (Cold Throw vs Hot Throw explains why), so judge it over a few days, not an evening.
Most jar candles give off little unlit, but some candles are made for it. Our Le Bonne Pomme is a hand-painted apple of hand-poured soy and beeswax, designed for cold diffusion: displayed under its handblown glass cloche, it scents a room without being lit. Its fragrance lasts about 60 days, depending on room size. It can be lit, but isn't meant to be: the painted finish will melt and the wax may drip, which is not a defect. Can You Burn a Painted Candle? How Hand-Painting Works explains why.
How long the scent lingers
After you blow it out. Fragrance in the air thins as fresh air replaces it, so ventilation sets the pace. The EPA notes that opening windows and doors, and running fans that vent outdoors, raise the rate at which outdoor air comes in, so an open window clears scent faster.
Over the candle's life. No candle keeps its scent forever, even on the shelf. The NCA puts the life span of highly fragrant candles at 6 to 12 months, depending on the scent, and advises storing them somewhere cool, dark and dry with the lid on. The most volatile top notes tend to go first; How to Read Fragrance Notes: Top, Heart and Base explains the layers.
FAQ
How long does it take for a scented candle to smell?
You'll notice it near the candle once the wax starts to melt. Give it at least two hours, or about an hour per inch of the candle's width, before you judge how well it scents the room.
How long does the smell of a candle last after you blow it out?
It depends more on the room than the candle. With the windows and doors shut, the scent lingers; open them, or run a fan that vents outdoors, and it clears faster.
How long does a candle scent last without burning?
A jar candle kept with its lid on, somewhere cool, dark and dry, keeps its scent best. A candle made for cold diffusion is meant to give its fragrance to the room as it sits. Le Bonne Pomme's lasts about 60 days, depending on room size.
