Is It Bad Luck to Have an Unlit Candle? Meanings and Superstitions

By Simone Delorme6 min read

Is an unlit candle bad luck? What religious and folk traditions say, why online omens are left out, a short note on dreams, and why to keep a candle unlit.

No. Nothing in the religious and folk traditions we checked treats an unlit candle as unlucky. Candle customs care about what lighting a candle starts and, in a few cases, what putting one out ends. The unlit candle is simply the state before.

Here is what those traditions say, what online lists add, a short note on dreams, and why a candle can be an object you keep rather than a flame you wait for.

Where candle superstitions come from

Two facts help explain why candles carry so much meaning: light was precious, and a flame is dangerous.

Wax candles were once costly. The National Candle Association says tallow was the typical everyday candle wax in Europe and the Americas until the eighteenth century, and that beeswax, introduced to Europe in the Middle Ages, was "rarely used in homes because of its great expense." When a candle was that scarce, it's no surprise that lighting one tended to mean something.

The danger is documented too. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reminds readers that a candle is an open flame that can easily ignite anything that can burn. Its analysis of 2014 to 2018 US home fires found that three in five candle fires started when something that could burn was too close to the candle, and that in 16 percent of the fires the candle was unattended or abandoned. The modern rules are in Candle Rules: Care and Safety for Every Candle.

Candles in religion and folk custom

The best-documented customs share a pattern. The meaning arrives with the flame.

Candlemas. Candles are blessed on 2 February, when many Christians mark the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. The Catholic Encyclopedia's 1908 entry describes the blessing of beeswax candles, then a procession in which everyone carries a lit one, representing the entry of Christ, "the Light of the World," into the Temple. A Lutheran liturgical journal describes the same rite from the pews: individual unlit candles are handed out to the congregation before the blessing. The candles are handed out unlit and carried lit.

Easter. At the Easter Vigil, the Paschal candle is blessed and lit from newly blessed fire. In the days before, the movement runs the other way. At Tenebrae, a service of Holy Week, candles on a stand are put out one by one, and the last is hidden behind the altar. The Catholic Encyclopedia reads the service as a funeral dirge for Christ, with the darkness chosen to express the Church's desolation.

Shabbat. Jewish households light candles to begin the Sabbath. Chabad says to light them eighteen minutes before sunset, and describes their purpose as bringing a soft, peaceful atmosphere to the day of rest.

Deepavali. UNESCO added Deepavali, also called Diwali, to its list of the world's intangible cultural heritage in 2025. It describes a festival in which people light lamps and candles, one that symbolizes "the victory of light over darkness and good over evil."

Birthdays. The best-known candle custom is the least settled. Wikipedia's survey of the birthday cake says the origin of candles on the cake is unknown, that the often-repeated link to the Greek goddess Artemis hasn't been established, and that candles on cakes can be traced to eighteenth-century German children's celebrations.

In each of these, the unlit candle has no meaning of its own. The meaning attaches to lighting it or, at Tenebrae, to putting it out.

What about the omens you find online?

Online lists add many more candle omens: flames that flicker or burn blue, wax that runs down one side, a candle that won't stay lit. We left them out because we couldn't trace them to a credible source. Treat them as popular modern belief, fun to trade and not evidence of anything.

A flame that flickers or smokes has a plainer explanation. The NCA says a candle that continually flickers or smokes isn't burning properly, and its advice is to trim the wick to ¼ inch and keep the candle out of drafts.

Whether it's bad luck to give a candle is a separate question, answered in What Does It Mean When Someone Gives You a Candle?

What an unlit candle means in a dream

Dream-interpretation sites assign meanings to an unlit candle, and any of them is a popular modern reading, not an established one. The Sleep Foundation says that how to interpret dreams, and whether they have meaning at all, are matters of considerable controversy. If a dream candle stays with you, your own reading of it is as good as any.

Candles as objects, not just flames

A candle doesn't need a flame to be doing its job. Victorian parlors kept wax fruit and flowers under glass for display. Emma Peachey's 1851 guide to wax flower modeling says glass shades are requisite for covering a bouquet, and museums hold the results, such as the Royal Collection's wax fruit arrangement under a glass dome. Those objects were made to be looked at, not lit. A Short History of Wax Fruit tells the story.

Candles made as objects today follow the same logic. Their finish or form is the point, and a flame would use it up. Should Decorative Candles Be Lit? explains how to tell which kind you have. Some are also designed to scent a room unlit, through what candlemakers call cold throw, covered in Cold Throw vs Hot Throw. For the wider category, see Candles That Scent a Room Without Being Lit.

Our Le Bonne Pomme is one. It is a sculptural apple of hand-poured soy and beeswax, hand-painted one by one and presented under a handblown glass cloche. Displayed under its cloche, it scents a room without being lit. It can be lit, but isn't meant to be: the painted finish will melt and the wax may drip, which is not a defect.

If you do light a candle, light it for a reason and follow the candle rules. If you don't, an unlit candle is still a candle you can enjoy.

FAQ

Is it bad luck to have an unlit candle? No. The traditions we checked attach meaning to lighting a candle or putting one out, not to having one unlit. Plenty of candles are meant to stay that way.

What does an unlit candle symbolize? In the customs above, nothing by itself. The meaning comes with the lighting: the Candlemas candles carried lit, the Paschal candle lit from new fire, the Shabbat candles lit just before sunset. Online and dream sources offer readings of their own, but those are popular modern belief.

Is it bad luck to give candles as a gift? That has its own article: What Does It Mean When Someone Gives You a Candle?

Is it bad luck to blow out a candle? None of the traditions above says so. Birthday candles are blown out on purpose. For a candle you've been burning, the NCA says to use a snuffer or gently blow out the flame, and never to use water, which can splatter hot wax.

Can you keep a candle you never light? Yes, if it was made for that. A candle made to be displayed, like a sculpted or painted piece, is an object first. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
