Gifts for people who love candles, chosen for what they don't own yet: a sculptural candle to keep, a glass cloche, the right tools and a new scent.

The best gifts for people who love candles are the things they haven't bought for themselves: a candle made to keep rather than burn, a glass cloche to display it, a proper set of tools, or a scent from a direction they've never tried. Someone with a full shelf doesn't need another jar in the scent they already love. They need what goes next to it.

Here are four candle gift ideas built on that rule.

Something they won't burn

Most candle lovers own candles to use up. Few own one made to keep. A sculptural candle is an object first: wax that has been carved, modeled or painted, then set on a shelf and left unlit. It's the most reliable of unique candle gift ideas, and one of the more unusual, because nobody who loves candles already has too many of the ones they don't burn.

Cire Trudon, the Paris candlemaker, sells wax busts of Napoléon, Marie-Antoinette and Louis XIV, and files them under interior decoration rather than with its candles. Whether a decorative piece should ever be lit depends on how it was made. Should Decorative Candles Be Lit? explains how to tell.

A sculptural candle can scent a room, too. Le Bonne Pomme is a sculptural apple of hand-poured soy and beeswax, hand-painted one by one and presented under a handblown glass cloche. It's designed for cold diffusion: displayed under its cloche, it scents a room without being lit, for about 60 days, depending on room size. It can be lit, but isn't meant to be: the painted finish will melt and the wax may drip, which is not a defect.

If you're looking for unique candle gifts for her, or for him, this is the one to start with. Une Pomme was $42 and Trois Pommes $101 when we checked in October 2026. For more on the category, see Candles That Scent a Room Without Being Lit.

Tools

People who love candles tend to light them more than they look after them. A good set of tools is the gift that fixes it, and it's rarely something they buy for themselves.

  • A wick trimmer. The National Candle Association recommends trimming the wick to ¼ inch before every burn. Scissors struggle at the bottom of a jar; a trimmer's angled head reaches down. Look for one with a flat end that catches the trimmed tip, since the NCA also advises keeping the wax pool free of trimmings and debris.
  • A snuffer. A small bell on a long handle that puts the flame out by cutting off its air. The NCA recommends a snuffer or a gentle breath, and warns against water, which can make hot wax splatter. For jar candles, Homesick, the candle company, suggests a snuffer with a dangling bell, which still reaches the flame as the wax gets lower.
  • A wick dipper. A thin hooked rod that presses the lit wick into the melted wax and then lifts it straight back up. By Homesick's own account, it puts the flame out without smoke and leaves the wick coated in wax, ready to relight. The one rule: lift the wick before the wax sets around it.
  • A heat-resistant tray. Scottish Fire and Rescue Service advises standing candles on a heat-resistant surface. A stone or metal tray does that, and keeps the tools in one place.

Choose the three tools in one finish, brass or blackened steel, so they look like a set when they sit on the tray.

Something for display

A glass cloche turns a candle into something to look at. Over a candle that isn't burning, it keeps dust off and holds scent close. The NCA recommends storing candles with the lid on to keep them clean of dust and debris, and a cloche does the same job for a candle on display. Does a Lid Keep a Candle's Scent? explains what happens to the fragrance underneath.

There is one rule: a cloche goes only over a candle that's out and cool. Glass over a flame traps heat. Scottish Fire and Rescue warns against burning a candle even under a shelf, because the heat rises to it. Our guide to how to use a candle cloche covers lifting, cleaning and sizing.

Trudon makes one to suit its own candles. La Cloche is a mouth-blown dome on a hand-finished wooden base, 24 cm tall and 14 cm across, and the house says it "protects the candle and concentrates its perfume." Whatever you choose, measure the candle first. The dome should clear the wick and leave room around the sides, so the glass never touches the wax.

If you're giving Le Bonne Pomme, the cloche comes with it.

A scent they haven't tried

Most people who love candles love one kind of smell, and their shelf shows it. The most useful gift for them is a well-made candle that goes somewhere new. Read the notes, which are usually listed as top, heart and base, rather than the name on the label.

If their shelf is mostlyTry
Woods, smoke and leatherFruit, or something green
Vanilla, caramel and amberSomething drier: green notes, cedar, citrus
Clean linen and citrusSomething warmer: rose, musk, wood
Pine and baking spiceA fresh fruit with no spice at all

The last row matters most for candle gift ideas at Christmas, when every shelf fills with pine and cinnamon. Many apple candles lean toward apple pie. A fresh apple is a different thing, as we explain in Apple Candles Without the Cinnamon.

Le Bonne Pomme's fragrance is by Mane, the French fragrance house founded in 1871. It opens on crisp apple skin, melon and peach, moves to rose and red berries, and settles on caramel, musk and wood. There's warmth in the base, but no spice on the notes list. What Does an Apple Candle Smell Like? describes how that kind of scent is built.

FAQ

What can I give a candle lover that isn't a candle? Tools and display pieces: a wick trimmer, a snuffer and a wick dipper in one finish, a heat-resistant tray, or a glass cloche for a candle they already own.

Are candles a good gift? For someone who loves them, yes, as long as you choose something they don't already have. Scent is personal, so read the notes and pick a direction that's new to them, or give a sculptural candle they'll keep for its form.

What's a candle gift that lasts? One that isn't burned. A sculptural candle kept on display keeps its shape, and Le Bonne Pomme scents a room unlit for about 60 days, depending on room size. A cloche or a good set of tools lasts for years.

Is there a candle you don't have to light? Yes. Candles designed for cold diffusion scent a room without a flame. Le Bonne Pomme is one: displayed under its cloche, it scents a room without being lit.
