Scenting the home

How to Make Your Bathroom Smell Good, Always

By Bernadette Lemaire7 min read

To make a bathroom smell good, fix the source first: steam, damp towels and drains. Then whether a lit candle helps, and flameless scent for a small room.

To make your bathroom smell good, start by fixing what makes it smell bad, then add a scent that suits a small, steamy room. The usual suspects are moisture, damp towels and drains, and an exhaust fan does more about them than any fragrance can. Once the air is clean, a scent that doesn't need a flame keeps it smelling good between cleanings.

Fix the source first: ventilation, towels, drains

Ventilation

Start with moisture, because damp is what turns a bathroom musty. The EPA's advice is to run the bathroom fan or open the window when you shower, and to keep indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 (EPA). The same guide notes that a home can smell moldy even when you can't see where the mold is. A musty smell that comes back after cleaning is a sign of moisture somewhere, not a call for more fragrance.

The Department of Energy's Building America Solution Center goes further. It recommends an exhaust fan that vents outdoors, not into an attic or wall cavity, says windows alone shouldn't be relied on, and suggests leaving the fan running for an hour after a shower, which a timer switch makes easy (Building America Solution Center).

Towels

A damp towel is often the smell people blame on the room. Towels have their own section below.

Drains

Sink, shower and tub drains have a P-trap, a bend in the pipe that holds water as a seal against sewer gas. When a drain goes unused, that water can evaporate and let the smell in. The South Davis Sewer District advises running water in every sink, shower and floor drain at least once a month (South Davis Sewer District). A guest bathroom that sits empty for weeks is the usual culprit.

If a drain smells even when it's in use, clear the hair and residue caught at the stopper. If a sewer smell persists after that, call a plumber.

Then the obvious: clean the toilet, including under the rim, and empty the bin often. Fragrance can't do those jobs.

Does lighting a candle in the bathroom work?

It adds fragrance, but it doesn't fix anything, and a bathroom is an awkward place for a flame.

As a scent. A candle releases most of its fragrance from its pool of melted wax, which takes time to form. CandleScience, a candle-making supplier, says the scent of a burning candle is usually judged after at least two hours (CandleScience). A candle lit for ten minutes after a shower hasn't had time to reach full strength. How Long Does It Take a Candle to Scent a Room? covers the timing.

As an odor remover. The old trick is to strike a match. Two Norwegian chemists told Science Norway that a flame can, in principle, burn hydrogen sulfide, the main offender, but a match meets far too little of the gas to clear a room, and its smoke mostly masks the smell (Science Norway). They were talking about matches, not candles. Either way, a small flame is no substitute for the fan.

Can you light a candle in a bathroom? Yes, if you follow the usual rules. The NFPA says to keep candles at least 1 foot from anything that can burn, put them on a sturdy, uncluttered surface, and blow them out when you leave the room (NFPA). In a small bathroom, a foot of clearance from towels, shower curtains and toilet paper is harder to find than it sounds. The National Candle Association also advises keeping candles away from fans and air vents (NCA), and in a bathroom that's often the fan you should be running.

Flameless scent for small rooms

A small room with the door closed holds fragrance, which works in your favor: you need less, and a quiet source is enough. Candles That Scent a Room Without Being Lit explains why, and where to place one.

The options:

How it worksBest for
Unlit candle made for displayFragrance leaves the wax at room temperatureSteady background scent on a shelf
Reed diffuserOil climbs the reeds and evaporatesSteady background scent
Scented wax sachetFragrance leaves the wax; there's no wickInside a cabinet or linen closet
Room sprayA burst of fragrance in the airA quick refresh before guests

Our own Le Bonne Pomme is the first kind. It's an apple of hand-poured soy and beeswax, hand-painted and presented under a handblown glass cloche. Displayed under its cloche, it scents a room without being lit, for about 60 days, depending on room size. In a bathroom, give it a shelf out of the shower's spray, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources such as a heated towel rail.

Best scents for a bathroom

There's no single best smell for a bathroom, but a small room tends to reward a lighter hand. Fresh, green, citrus and fruit notes read as clean. Heavy, sweet scents can crowd a room this size.

Le Bonne Pomme's fragrance, by Mane, the French fragrance house founded in 1871, opens on crisp apple skin, melon and peach, with rose and red berries at the heart and caramel, musk and wood at the base.

Whatever you choose, keep to one scent per room. A diffuser, a candle and a spray in three different fragrances compete with one another.

Towels that dry and stay fresh

Towels are the other half of a fresh bathroom. Cleveland Clinic suggests hanging a used towel spread out on a towel bar rather than bunched on a hook, so it dries between uses. It also suggests washing bath towels at least once a week, and two or three times a week if your home is humid. A towel that smells, it notes, is a sign that bacteria or mold is growing in the fabric (Cleveland Clinic).

A few more habits help. Don't leave damp towels in a hamper or folded on a shelf. Give a bath mat a chance to dry too. And keep the fan running after a shower, because the towels dry in the same air.

If your towels smell even straight out of the wash, Why Do Towels Smell, and How Do You Fix It? goes through the causes, and How to Wash Towels: The Complete Care Guide covers the laundry side.

Beyond the bathroom, see How to Make Your House Smell Good: A Room-by-Room Guide. If you're wondering how much scent a room needs, How Many Candles Does It Take to Scent a Room? has the short answer. In the bedroom, Can You Sleep With a Candle Burning? covers the one rule that matters.

FAQ

What is the best smell for a bathroom?

It's personal, but light, fresh scents such as green notes, citrus and fruit tend to suit a small room. Pick one and use it alone rather than layering several.

What can I put in my bathroom to make it smell good?

First, a working exhaust fan and a towel bar that lets towels dry. Then something that scents the room steadily without a flame: a candle made to be displayed unlit, a reed diffuser, or a sachet in the cabinet.

Can you light a candle in a bathroom?

Yes, as long as it's at least a foot from towels, curtains and paper, on a stable surface, and blown out when you leave. In a small bathroom, that clearance can be hard to find.

How do I make my bathroom smell good without air freshener?

Ventilate, keep the drains in use, dry and wash towels often, and clean regularly. Those steps remove the source of the smell instead of covering it.
